No Fear Friday

Fear is holding you back.

Read it, think about it, believe it because it is true. When you get around to deciding you want to change your life for the better this is what holds you back. You want to make the change, you want to start working out and you want to start eating better. Why don't you? Because you are afraid. You are afraid what people are going to say about you in the gym, afraid of looking stupid. You are afraid that you can't give up 6 sodas a day, afraid you can't live with out the caffeine/sugar buzz getting you through the afternoon slump. You are afraid giving up your weekend partying will cause your friends to make fun of you at first and then just quit calling all together. You are afraid you can't follow through. You are afraid of letting go of your current life......  Your afraid of being uncomfortable!

Until you can truly overcome the fear you will never succeed. OK, its Friday everyone loves Friday! Let's start this thing on Friday. Everyone starts Monday with good intentions and they let everything slip away by Friday, party time right! Quit it Friday is No Fear day! Drive home from work put on the most important thing you can wear a smile look in that mirror and say I am not afraid. No matter your situation remember that opportunities are created and circumstances are an illusion. You are where you are because you decided to be there.......  Don't go drown your fears in booze and bad decisions. Drown your fears with happiness and love. Make one good decision on Friday and let it carry you through the weekend. Make another good decision on Saturday, again on Sunday. When Monday comes around you won't dread the idea of starting off on the right foot, you are already there. Monday will be about continuation. If you don't really want to, deep down have an urgency that you have to do this it will never get done. So go out today sign up for that gym membership. (Tip: most gyms are trying to meet a quota at the end of the month you can most likely negotiate a deal.) Go to the grocery store and don't even wheel the cart down the junk food aisles stay out of the aisles completely. Shop the produce and the fresh meat without even trying to weed through the traffic in the abyss that is the grocery store aisle filled with junk and processed cardboard. No Fears today No Fears. Escape your Fear become your Dream!!

Program vs. Effort

If I were to follow in the footsteps of most other trainers I would tell you something like this "Follow my program and get results faster than you can imagine. My program uses a modern technique the I developed to help clients reach their goals!!"

There are some key words there that catch your eye and get you thinking right away FASTER, MODERN, DEVELOPED, GOAL all of which are used by any advertising company or salesman trying to get the consumer to buy their product. I want to tell you most of what you hear from trainers is complete bull. There are better trainers than others but from what I have seen in my experiences little to none of their talent has to do with the program they have you follow. Almost any program can be successful if A. you believe in it and B. if you give it 100% intensity. I'm not talking giving 100%, 50% of the time like most people do. I'm saying that if you stick with a workout/nutrition program and complete it with a high intensity and an urgency for success you will be successful. Now at first glance you may say that I think every trainer is a good trainer and every program is a good program. This is not true there are bad trainers, average trainers, good trainers and phenomenal trainers. This is another subject completely. The subject I am focusing on is the Program. There are programs that are not designed to meet the goal you have in mind but the millions of programs out there that are designed to reach a common goal... Fitness. There are different aspects of fitness whether it be athletic prowess, weight loss, muscular strength, aesthetic build, heart health etc. That is not the point either. My point is that any one of the programs can get you to the goal that it was designed for. I can not tell you that a workout system will or will not work for you by looking at the program itself. I can watch you perform said program and tell you almost immediately. How you ask? By watching you perform the program I can judge your effort. Results are all about effort. If you put the right amount of effort in to just about any program it will most definetly be a successful program. Your attitude before starting the program could also determine the outcome. The more excited or pumped up you are will translate to how hard you work. Programs like Crossfit, P90X and even Zumba work because they get you excited about working hard! They also continuosly keep you pumped with a number of techniques including competition, participant involvment and record keeping. So when you are choosing a program what you really need to do is choose to give it 100% effort! Chose something you are honestly excited about. Going through the motions will get you no where in life and it will especially get you no where in your workout. A program is only as good as the intensity you give it!! If you can't push the intensity.... Hire a trainer! Hey I know a guy ;)

The Decision

My life as a trainer to date has been filled with A lot of ups and downs. This is not based on who my clients are, my number of clients or the results my clients have achieved. This based solely on my opinion of my training in general. I have always wanted to be the best trainer that I could be and thought that I had done everything in my power to achieve that success. The type of success I'm talking about can't be measured by money or social standing but it is measured by my peace of mind knowing that I could not do better. What is holding me back is one thing that I have let slip out of my minds eye. Something I want to hark as an importance not only in fitness or wealth but life. You will get nowhere unless you have a goal. A concrete goal, something that you can look at everyday and say, YES that is where I want to be! With out a goal you are living a life without purpose. A goal gives you a reason to wake up in the morning. It doesn't matter what that goal is, it's yours and nobody can take it away from you. A goal costs nothing. A goal takes no skill to make. A goal can not be destroyed but only created. A goal is the first step in a decision. That brings me to what I am writing about today. I have decided I will stop living day to day life and start controlling the outcome of my life. My goal is my goal and I will not share it with you, as I would not have you share yours with me. If I shared I would only fuel the haters, the naysayers and all the lot. Everyone is the same those who say that you will fail are the losers. They are the ones that have failed not because they did not get where they wanted to be but because they quit trying. This I believe is what has held me back and continues to hold me back. I quit trying, I think I am trying but in reality I have quit. I have become what society wants me to be. An hourly worker who has a job like everyone else. What was once my life has become a job. Job is such a dirty word in life. You don't go to a job to achieve greatness. You go to a job to earn that dollar. When you can make your job part of your life again then can you become what you want to be. It doesn't matter what it is. Flipping burgers, changing tires, punching numbers or whatever when that job becomes a task. When the only reason you do that job is because your "supposed" to that is when you have failed yourself. If your flipping burgers and enjoy it your goal should be to own the burger joint. If you change tires and enjoy it maybe you should become an engineer that designs safer, more efficient tires. If you punch numbers you already know the equation staying in the same place your are will continually produce the same number. I personally love my job, have a passion for my job, work hard at my job but none the less I have let it become a job. I count the hours worked, the people I have provided a service for and said eh... not too shabby. Today is the day my friends that is ending. No more not too shabby. I will work my butt off and this job will get me to my goal! It doesn't matter what your job is you can do the same. If you can not I say you are a failure. Get out now! If you hate what you do everyday I want to tell you something it took a lot of trying to realize. Deep down you are exactly where you WANT to be! If you did not want to be there you wouldn't be. You made the choice you made the decision now make another choice. Do Work everyday. Put everything in to it truly everything you have and find out where this job can take you. Jobs don't get you anywhere in life WORK does! Give it your all or get nothing in return.......

Fort Carson Spartan Race: a below average review from an Average Runner

I recently competed/completed a Spartan Sprint in Fort Carson Colorado. The race consisted of 28 obstacles spread over 4.5 miles of rough/mountainous terrain. The experience was positively like none that I had previously encountered. That being said it wasn't the best experience nor was it the worst as far as running races go it was somewhere in the middle. An average experience. The marketing geniuses that came up with the race know exactly what they are doing!! My Race Review:

The price tag on a Spartan Race seems pretty reasonable at first glance. Then the added fees come. You pay for event insurance, parking, shuttle, bag check and last but not least a spectator fee. When you add it up you are paying more for this race than you would pay for a prestigious marathon at which you would receive a swag bag that at least made you feel good about the price you paid. Spartan Race bases their price on the value of the experience...... I'm guessing I haven't found where the money would be legitimized elsewhere. This event is all about the money and lots of it. Now I am not downgrading the value of the experience at all, it is a race that you ultimately have to experience to really have any idea of what it is and what training it will take to be successful. The training I did leading up was a series of strength, explosiveness,  strength endurance and mixed running. I watched many videos to put together a training plan and based on what I saw it didn't make sense to train too specifically for each obstacle because 1. you never know the conditions for which you will be competing and 2. the obstacles themselves are fairly short. Training a specific obstacle in my opinion would not necessarily be to your benefit. That being said practicing a few of the obstacles such as the spear throw and traverse wall would be helpful. These are more technique based obstacles rather than strength or endurance. Overall I felt pretty good about my training going in and prepared to post a decent time..... not going to be modest I was in it to win it!!

Race day started out like a lot of races, packet pickup, bag check, check the lay out and warming up. There was some added security because of the recent tragedy at Boston and also because we were on a military base. The bag check fee and shuttle fee were a little ridiculous for what you get. Pay $5 dollars to wait on a bus you may not get on because of the mass amount of people that are also wanting on the bus. Pay $5 dollars for them to toss you bag in a pile of bags that mostly look all the same with tag with your number and middle name..... unimpressed to say the least. One cool thing I really like about the race check in process was that they asked you if you wanted numbers written on you. You didn't necessarily have to have any numbers it was an option, a lot of races make you feel like you have to have numbers on your legs, arms, forehead etc. We also had a pretty cool head band in our race packet we could wear if we chose to, most did. When you get in to the start area you just get this jacked up feeling or at least I did. Everyone around you is nervous, not knowing what to expect. The stories over heard from the racers that already completed their respective heat and the "veterans" of spartan racing trying to give everyone pointers on the course. The PA announcers constant banter was very good at getting you ready to go! Every heat was the same thing but he was a great announcer and his enthusiasm made me feel like I was hearing it for the first time! My mind was racing the entire time I was waiting for my heat. I was having a pre race adrenaline rush that I couldn't shake and I knew it would not be to my benefit. The pride coming of the recent finishers was radiating in to the crowd waiting for their turn. The anticipation of the race honestly may have been the best pre race experience I have ever experienced and was most definitely the best part of this experience for me!

After the pre race spartan rituals and the smoke bomb filled the start with smoke we were off. Like any other race everyone is anticipating being the fastest in the heat. There were between 30-40 ahead of me to start the race. I didn't want to push my way threw to the front and didn't really know what to expect anyway so I stayed in the crowd hoping for an early opening. The opening came early for sure the first obstacles were 4 water/mud pits the first I estimate at 6-7 feet the middle two around 4 feet and the last was another 6 footer. I found an opening after the first pit and took off like a rocket sprinting and clearing the next two pits. The last pit I used my better judgement and just stepped in and climbed out with out even thinking about trying to clear. The mud was pretty slick and I instantly knew I had picked the wrong shoes to wear for the race..... I made up a lot of ground and sprinted to the next obstacle, a series of under and over obstacles varying in height. Probably the easiest obstacles on the course. After the series I was in 2nd place in my heat and this is where a major running portion of the race began. Running is probably my strength and that is what I was relying on. I took off for the next half mile of rugged terrain at my estimate of about 5:15-5:30 minute per mile pace. I quickly took the lead on the heat and started to widen the lead a little at a time. The next obstacle was the monkey bars. Easy enough but I took my time drying my hands in dirt... burpees were not on my to do list for this event!! I flew through the monkey bars but while I was taking my time 3 or 4 runners in my heat caught up to me and that is when my competitive juices kicked in. I was not matter what from there on out going to get passed by anyone in my heat. Determined I kicked up the pace after that. The obstacles seemed to fly by and really were not too difficult. There was a wooden structure that had to be gone over with 3 points touching at all time. Probably the shortest obstacle on the course but in my haste I dropped through two points, I recovered though and flew through to the next few obstacles. There was the Hobie Hop or something like that. With a rubber band around the ankles the idea was to run up hill, hop over a few wires, go under a few wires and take it off at the bottom of the hill...... pointless obstacle. Hope they don't keep that one. There walls that increased in height starting at 5' all the way up to the monster 8' wall. Some people were struggling and there were plenty of people helping each other over the more difficult walls. I was still in compete or die mode at this point and passed by all the people needing help and flew through the walls. The upper body strength was not really the key to the walls like I expected, the key was to never lose momentum. Run, jump, grab and climb your way over never stop and try again. I think that is when a person would struggle. The log hop was next and this is where I committed my first stupid mistake. I chose the obviously worst row. There was a line at all the other rows and nobody was choosing this one for a reason. It had one log sticking up higher than all the other rows. I stopped and thought for a second. I was probably a mile and half in and I had already passed maybe 150 people from the heats that started before me. Instead of being happy with that I thought..... I better keep this train a moving. Went to the lemon row of logs started off well was flying through lost my footing and found out the hard way choosing the right shoes and taking your time on certain obstacles is much better than 30 burpees. Soul crushing at that point I had been flying through passing people like crazy feeling pretty damn good about myself and I had to stop and complete 30 burpees watching a lot of the people I just passed smiling as the ran by me...... Confidence and arrogance, there is a fine line separating the two and when you cross that line you pay the price, in this case I paid the price with burpees! (30 of them)

There were a couple minor obstacles before I came to the end of my race. It wasn't the end of my run but my race was over. The mud crawl, consists of about 50 or 60 yards of mud, hills, trenches and water pits that you crawl through while staying under the barbed wire that stands about 2 and half feet above the surface. The was just a terrible experience. The rock in the mud tears in to your legs and chest and for me the worst part was the crowd of people.  It was nearly impossible to navigate through all the other competitors and it was impossible without being a little bit rude. I was still in race mode so rudeness wasn't really a problem for my so I crawled, swam and pushed my way through the pit in decent time. As I was running toward the next obstacle the spear throw I looked down at my wrist in complete dismay........... I had lost my timing chip!!! From there on out no matter how fast or slow I ran I can't even prove a finish because I was now on the list as DNF did not finish. I honestly thought about walking off the course at that point, going to the port a potty and throwing up. My competitive nature was tearing my apart. I knew all the hard work was for not.

I had a dilemma on my hands. Do I still finish the course as fast as possible or just cruise through and have fun....... Fast as possible and hopefully I can get some sort of idea how fast I completed the course. I was too pissed to even think about taking time on the spear so I chucked it as hard I could and did 30 burpees, traverse wall next real muddy, said screw it 30 burpees. I got more mad at each ensuing obstacle the next was the slick wall. Walking up to the obstacle there was a mob of 50-60 people stuck at the obstacle. These were all people that had started way before I had and who knows how long they had been stuck here! I pushed my way through got over the wall and sprinted off in to the distance. This portion of the race became sprint-obstacle-sprint-obstacle. The obstacles were short and simple pull a rope here, drag a tire here, flip a tire there nothing exceptionally difficult. Then I came to one of the more difficult obstacles carry a sandbag up the mountain and back down, not too bad but I vowed to sprint that mountain at all costs I was not stopping. I didn't have a problem until getting to the top and yet again hitting a mob of people sitting and resting or slowly moving forward. I took the long way going off course and running around the group. I told myself I was going to be encouraging to everyone no matter how discouraged I was after losing my chip. I cheered everyone on along the way even offered to carry a couple of people's sand bags but my offer was declined. A few more steep hill climbs, lots of mud and a couple of very easy obstacles later I came to what I will call the "beast" obstacle. A backpack up the steepest climb in the course. The word on the course was that the men's backpack was 100 lbs and the women's 50lbs. That is a heavy ass backpack. Still determined to run up I put the pack on and started on a trot up the hill, quickly stopped yet again by a dense group of people sitting, walking backward and slowly inching up the hill. At this point I knew there was less than a mile left in the race so I just made my own trail and took off up the hill, helping a few people up that had fallen on my way up and acting as balance for an older gentleman on the turn to down hill and then off down the hill I went. At the bottom of the hill I was really figuring out the difficulty of the race my quads were on fire. Despite the burn I dropped the pack and took off sprinting down the course. I reached a few short walls and jumped them with ease. With less than half a mile left in the race I got to the final mud pit, a series of holes full of mud followed by a mud hill to climb. The series went on for 4 or 5 hills and ended with a log over a final water pit to cross. Again waiting in line otherwise the obstacle itself not too difficult. One final half mile jaunt and then the last two obstacles. Rope climb and cargo net. I came up to the last two knowing the finish line was just on the other side. I though to myself I could finish but I would be waiting on everyone else to finish at the same time getting more and more mad that I had lost my timing chip.

I made a quick decision asked the worker at the rope climb what time it was. I was about 50 minutes in to the course. I looked at the waiting line ahead of me waiting for the cargo net.... easily 100 plus people. At the moment someone was stuck on top afraid of heights not wanting to climb down, I talked to the worker for a few minutes and asked if I could go back through the course backwards? He just looked at me and said sure just don't tell anyone I said it was OK. My decision was made I took off back through the course, I was going back to finish with my wife. With no time on my mind it was time to try and enjoy the race. I passed all the participants I had traveled with a half to three quarter miles back. I kept running cheering on all the competitors along the way. I finally found my wife right before the back pack obstacle. She was distraught and passed ready to quit. I through her pack on my back and we pushed on through the course. It was a challenge to keep her moving at times and the difficulty of the course became more apparent at every obstacle. To me it wasn't too unbearable but she was in a serious struggle. I was determined to have a good time so we carried on toward the finish. As I passed the obstacles again I had a different view of each one seeing it for the second time. I was starting to appreciate the course and how it was set up. We reached the cargo net and opted for the 30 burpees rather than waiting 30 minutes to get to the front of the line. We jumped the fire pushed through the Spartans to the finish and received what we had come for..... our finisher medal. The piece we can put on display forever telling everyone "yep i did that!"

As soon as the race was over I was upset, a little bit tired, cold, muddy and still full of energy. I went right over to the pull up challenge and cranked of 27 pull ups burning off some much needed anger. Walking over to get washed off I had a moment to regroup toss my shoes in the charity truck and really think about the race. My main negative thoughts on the race, TOO many people. The crowding at the obstacles was just too much to handle. For someone wanting to go out there and race this is NOT for you. If I had to do it over again I would have signed up for the elite heat. The first heat of the morning when the Elite runners race. I don't consider my self elite but I would like to give myself a fair shot at the course. Less mud, less people and more speed. If you are out for fun and need plenty of rest don't worry about the elite heat but I still recommend an early heat before the course is completely destroyed.

Biggest Advice:

Shoes are a big factor, you will want something with good traction on the bottom but also something that doesn't hold water. You can not avoid water and mud there is just no way around it. In shoe choice I would also test a few pair out something that is going to let the water out is good but I would also look for something that will keep the rocks out. Rocks in my shoes made me so uncomfortable and foot health is important in any kind of race.

Go in to the race either looking to just have fun with a group or enter the elite heat. The course is too crowded for any racing during the day. I honestly passed 500+ people during the race, there are just too many walkers and people of low fitness level to navigate through to have any sort of success at really getting in to a race mode. The groups/couples on the course were having a blast the individuals were just as frustrated as me.

Don't expect to get your money's worth if you are a regular "fun runner" or if you regularly compete in 10k plus distances. Even the bottom of the barrel road races usually try to provide a great package for you at the race. Post race food, drink and camaraderie. The spartan race doesn't even provide a specialized event shirt. You get the same shirt as every other race in the world, you get a banana, cereal bar and a beer. For 100+ dollars this is a little weak especially because you pay for shuttle, bag check and spectators on top of all that it is pretty lame in the swag department. But you do get a finisher medal..... pretty lame as well to be honest.

All in all I have a bad taste in my mouth after this Spartan race. I don't want to discourage anyone looking for a fun and different event. Especially if you are out there for fun only. Sign up early and avoid the added cost later in the season. Get to the course early and enjoy the environment. I know what is coming now and what to look for. I would not train any differently but maybe train with less strength emphasis and more on running in water, mud and with wet feet in general. I will try another spartan race but it will not be the fort Carson race. This race had 28 obstacles in a sprint rather than the normal 15. After a couple months of sitting on it I know for sure I will sign up again but I will chose a better location and sign up for the Elite heat as well. The extra $30 will be worth it to deal with less of a crowd. Yes an extra $30 to compete they stick you every way they can. They are in it to make money and they are good at it. If you want the status of being a Spartan do it. If you are a serious runner pass. If you are a runner that just wants something different this is for you. Final words, it's not that fun during but when you look back it was a whole lot of fun, secure your timing chip losing it will really piss you off!!

This Trainer's Truths Part 1

Truth is most of you will quit reading after the second line or not read this at all

Truth is most of you that do read this will forget it in an hour

To Life:

Truth is you can not change your life without changing the way you live

Truth is, it is always hard it never gets easy and if it does get easy that means you quit trying

Truth is you will fail, everyone fails it is not a matter of IF it is a matter of when.

Truth is it isn't the government, your job, your coach, school, your parents, your spouse, your friend, your disability or any situation that is holding you back.

Truth is the only thing holding you back is you.

To weight loss:

Truth is you are not genetically incapable

Truth is there will be pain there will be sacrifice you will be uncomfortable

Truth is you aren't as out of shape as you think you are

Truth is you also aren't as fit as you think you are

Truth is you will never know until you try

Truth is any excuse you have, I have heard it before

Truth is if your food comes in a package they can put any words they want on the outside it doesn't change what is inside the package

Truth is "one won't hurt" is a lie you tell yourself and will ruin you every time. One is never enough but is ALWAYS too much.

Truth is "I eat pretty good" is yet another lie

Truth is there is no magic pill, secret exercise, special electronic device or certain type of clothing in the world that will take the weight off

Truth is we can use hundreds of different equations but numbers mean very little in the end

Truth is the secret isn't more cardio, weights or a certain diet to get you where you want to be.

Truth is the only thing that is going to get you there is SELF discipline.

Truth is YOU CAN

To athletes:

Truth is everyone is an athlete

Truth is the athlete with great genetics will have an upper hand

Truth is hard work trumps genetics every time

Truth is if you want to be average keep doing what everyone else is doing

Truth is if you want to be great you will need to do more than every athlete not just the next athlete

Truth is you aren't as good as you think you are

Truth is you are better than you think you are

Truth is if you are not working your hardest you will not get any better

Truth is there is ALWAYS someone working harder and doing more than you are

Truth is the risk of hard work is higher than the reward almost every time

Truth is the harder the work the higher the risk

Truth is you have a way better chance of ending your career with injury than you do of being successful at any level

Truth is if you don't take the risk you will never know

To Everyone:

Truth is when you decide to not give 100% you are NOT the only one that knows but you ARE the only that can make that decision

Truth is numbers don't lie but they also don't tell the entire story

Truth is comparing yourself to other people gets you nowhere

Truth is when you fail and YOU WILL FAIL, you are not a failure until you quit trying

Truth is you will not succeed until you decide to be HAPPY!!

Truth is I want you to succeed and will do everything I can to get you there

Delta Fit Phase #2

Analogy time, let's say you go to a restaurant and you order of the menu exactly what you want the food comes out and everything looks great. Then you start to eat and it tastes good for awhile but something is missing you can't put your finger on it but something just isn't there. When you are done eating you then have this bad taste in your mouth that you can't get rid until you brush your teeth or eat something else. You may start to think you got ripped off and chose to never eat at that particular restaurant again. OK maybe I went a little overboard on that analogy but that sums up my feelings for phase 2 of delta fit. I was even hesitant to write a review and have been delaying it because I don't have much good to say about phase 2 and I am not one to just bash a product because I didn't like it. In fact this may be just what you are looking for in a workout but it is not for me. I am going to attempt to put in to words who this phase of workouts would be good for and who will hate it. Bear with me because like I said I have a bad taste in my mouth about it.

OK here goes, you've made it through phase 1 feeling pretty good about yourself that was tough but I'm strong and busted out the workouts harder than even BJ towards the end of my 4 weeks. Pop in phase 2 DVD and click on workout A: Mad Minute Meltdowns. this consists of sequences 3 back to back to back movements for 20 seconds each with a 60 second rest between each complex/sequence for 15 consecutive rounds to give you a 30 minutes workout. I want to start of saying this is my favorite and in my opinion the best workout I have completed of the series so far. It promises a good workout and delivers that but still leaves you wanting more at the end, feeling amped up starting to get tired but just not quite burned like you want to be after a highly metabolic workout. This trend will continue as the phase progresses. If I am sounding negative about this workout I don't mean to be quite yet. This workout is good and most moderately to even well trained individuals would enjoy it as a supplement to what they are already doing. Beginners may not so much and I will tell you why. The demonstration and explanation of the movements are horrible and rushed. During your 60 second rest BJ is wasting time yelling about how hard he is working, while this is good motivation, why are you not showing us what is coming up next, yet another trend that continues throughout the phase. Beginners to the gym will have a hard time performing all the movements the first few times they do the DVD and then while you are supposed to progressively adapt to the harder movements you may just spend more time figuring out the moves then actually working out. BUT, this first workout is A LOT better at demonstrating and explanation than future workouts trust me. Some example sequences are as follows.  Spider Push up/Frog Push up/T-push up if you progressed well through phase 1 this should be a piece of cake and you have done all the movements in previous workouts. They stay similar to this with most the new moves being variations of all the previous workouts moves from phase 1.

Workout B: The Metabolic Matrix. After workout A you may be giddy with anticipation for what workout B has in store. This is where the workouts start getting frustrating. There is a suggestion for what size dumbbells to use but you notice that it has a round using 2 dumbbells and a round using 1 dumbbell. OK I can handle that one more dumbbell not a lot of added equipment...... Not likely if you are wanting to get the most out of the workout. My theory about this workout and future workouts is they thought people would up the reps in some movements and lower their reps in some so you can work with the same weight throughout the workout. Well this is not really howit works. BJ is using different weights throughout the workout so that reiterates the fact this is not intended. By the end of this workout I had used 4 different sets of dumbbells and 3-5 different sizes of single dumb bells. *disclaimer* I do the workout to get the absolute most out of it. Someone following the workout especially a beginner may be just fine using the same dumb bells for all and being on the lighter side might be just fine. Going in to the workout it is 6 movements 30 seconds each consecutively (which again means no good demonstration) with a minute rest between each cycle. 8 cycles total the first 4 cycles use 2 dumbbells and the second 4 cycles use 1 dumbbell. Round 1 or cycle 1-4 is the good part of this workout. The moves are simple although lots of weight changes are needed to make the workout difficult it is still in my opinion a good set of sequences and the oppurtunity to push the intensity is definitely there. Round 2 or cycle 5-8 is just not very good. I had to make a lot of weight changes and the technicality of a lot of the movements makes it hard to perform CORRECTLY without putting yourself in position for injury which instantly brings down the intensity or should. A lot of the moves would be hard for untrained individuals to perform with out adding changes and tweaks. For example the goblet pivoting squat while it gives you a core and leg workout in one you are putting your self in a risky position if you are using poor form, on top of that what weight do you use?. You can either make the squat worth while with a decently heavy weight or make the squat just a by product to the torso twisting action. I am not going to go through all of them but another example is the one-arm step-up+curl+press while this moves gets you off balance and challenges your equillibrium it does little to give you a decent workout. I think this type of workout has a purpose and a setting, for example with a trainer or under supervision of a trained professional who will properly cue you on the movement. The moves are starting to get to such a degree of technical difficulty that without a proper demonstration and good practice they become worthless to the moderately to low trained individual. The bones to a good workout are there it just doesn't deliver nice try BJ.

Workout  C: Calorie Crushing Combos
Don't get those expectations up too quick. You will have to work with this one quite a bit to get the weights you want for each move. I used a different set for about every movement. 6 different weights in all if I remember correctly. This workout consists of combination exercises 10 in total that you do for 2 minutes each with 1 minute rest in between. The explanation of these fairly highly technical combinations are just plain crap and while bj has plenty of time to make a good explanation it is just wasted for the most part. The combinations do provide a good burn and you will most likely crush some calories if you can perform at a high intensity for the 2 minutes in it's entirety. Definitely not likely  to happen your first few times doing the workout but when you get the hang of the combinations and how to perform them you will find you get a decent workout. I don't have much negative to say about this workout other than it will be a waste of time for true beginners. The only positive I will put in is that those highly trained individuals wanting to spice up the workout or just need a change will enjoy this one.

Phase 2 not much to say about it. I hate being over critical and too negative but these DVDs are getting worse as I go a long. I have gone through a few times and giving my self some time to really decide if Phase 2 was as bad as I initially thought...... It is. Understand one thing I am trying to think about this from the perspective of someone that does not have an athletic background, needs structure, has very little weight lifting/ exercise knowledge. When I do that I find these workouts to be a very bad place to start. The movements are overly technical for the 5th week in an exercise program and the technicality will most definitely bring down the intensity for those with lower coordination, strength and conditioning. To switch tones, those of you moderate to highly trained individual with knowledge of exercise technique and weight lifting execution may love these workouts. I loved the technical aspect personally but using 40 different sets of dumbbells and it looking like the free weights area of my wellness center just threw up was unappealing. This also makes it nearly impossible for more than one person to follow the video with out constantly picking up after yourself, believe me I attempted it more than once. Also unappealing, BJ expecting you to know every movement with little to no instruction. I will end on this note the workouts themselves are not bad. The presentation is poorly executed. I think I mentioned this before the bones are there for a potentially great thing in phase 2 but it is lacking the meat for me to recommend it to anyone. With that said I am not going to fully give up on this product it may still have some surprises in store. As a personal trainer I have found some of the new twists on old exercises getting me excited so who knows I may come back after Phase 3 with a rave review and tell the phase 2 me to sit back, shut up and enjoy the ride. So don't give up on Delta Fit as I have not. If you are reading this review and want an answer now.
